An animal rescue center called Hearts & Bones Rescue found a heartwarming way of honoring the dedicated frontline workers who are battling against the COVID-19 pandemic. The shelter is naming their adoptable dogs after the real-life health heroes like doctors, EMTs, police officers, and many more to show gratitude for their service.
The shelter, which has branches in New York City and Texas, has started to collect names for their rescue animals. They are asking their followers to nominate their heroes, who are battling the pandemic. Anyone can recommend a name using the link that is available on the shelter’s website and Instagram page. They also need to include the person’s workplace and a description of what they do.

Special announcement: to celebrate the health heroes working on the frontlines of the COVID-19 crisis, we will be naming all of our new dogs in their honor ❤️. And we want your help – nominate a healthcare worker (doctors, nurses, physician assistants, EMTs, etc.) at the link in our bio to have a dog named after them! Tell us why you’re nominating them and make sure to send the link in the form along to them so we can get their permission 😁 First up, introducing the amazing PA Beka! This gorgeous #saintbernard gal is named after our very own medical team member Beka, who works as a physician assistant in NYC. After a long shift treating patients with COVID, Beka will immediately check-in with the HBR medical team to see if our dogs need anything, helping to schedule their vet appointments and advising fosters and adopters on any medical questions. We rescued the canine Beka in Dallas last week and she’s a sweet, loving 1.5 yr old gal who does her namesake proud! She gets along with other pups and is a big fluffy 80 lb mush. We’re currently doing virtual adoption meetings and safe, contactless adoption hand-offs, so apply to adopt PA Beka today at heartsandbonesrescue.com! Lots of love to Beka and all our #healthheroes out there – nominate yours today 🖤 . . #adoptdontshop #hbrhealthheroes #stayhome #covid19 #nyc #saintbernardsofinstagram #dogsofinstagram #dogsofig #instadog #dogstagram #rescuedog #rescuedismyfavoritebreed #rescuedogsofinstagram #dogoftheday #dailydog #dogstagram #instadog #happydog #cutedog #bigdog #doglover #lovedogs #dogsmile #stbernard #adoptme #bestwoof #buzzfeedanimals
After that, the shelter will contact the hero to ask if it would be okay to name a rescue dog after them. The rescue center’s spokesperson said that they had received lots of heartwarming stories. The nominees were also thrilled that a dog was named in their honor.
The shelter noted that, depending on the number of nominated names, they might not be able to use them all. So far, they have already used several nominated health hero names on their adoptable dogs. These puppies and the stories behind their names are available on the rescue center’s Instagram page.

Just rescued: meet native New Yorker Officer Shawn, an adorable young beagley pup we rescued from our friends at @nycacc today! Officer Shawn is named after a dedicated member of the NYPD who works tirelessly every day to keep New Yorkers safe, and has been helping bring COVID patients to hospitals to get the care they need. His nominator says: “Officer Shawn has put his life on the line more times than I can count in this pandemic alone to get people the medical help and care they need, and saved many, many lives over the course of his career. He is a true hero and I am very proud to know and love him.” Thank you Officer Shawn for being a real life #hero – we hope the canine Shawn brings a smile to your face when you come home from the midnight shift. Stay tuned for more updates on this pup as he settles into his foster home 🖤 Help us continue to celebrate frontline heroes in the COVID pandemic as we name dogs in their honor – nominate a doctor, nurse, EMT, police officer, firefighter or any essential worker at the link in our bio! . . #adoptdontshop #heroes #nypd #nyc #dogsofnyc #adopt #fosteringsaveslives #beagle #beaglesofinstagram #savethemall #dogsofinstagram #dogsofig #instadog #dogstagram #dogoftheday #dailydog #rescuedogs #rescuedismyfavoritebreed #rescuedogsofinstagram #doglover #lovedogs #aplacetolovedogs #dogscorner #dogsofinsta #buzzfeedanimals
One of the dogs that the shelter featured on Instagram was Medic Montesino, who was named after an NYC paramedic. They also called a rescue beagle Officer Shawn after an NYPD member. The other pooches were Nurse Ali, Nurse Lauren, Physician Assistant Beka, and Dr. Zhang. The short bio included in the post explains how these heroes help in the fight against the deadly respiratory virus.
Since the start of the pandemic, many people have decided to adopt or foster pets. Thankfully, this also helped lots of shelters as they face limited supplies and resources. Hopefully, these dogs who are named after the hero workers will soon find their loving homes too.
